"Crunchy Cons" ???

Just so our friend Mike O'Connor stops teasing us that all our blog is about is the baby, I'll turn to one of our mutually favorite topics...politics.

We are both dying to read this book , which describes the group of people that both "vote for George W. Bush and shop at Whole Foods". We thought we were the only family in America like that! (Disclaimer: the social worker in the family needs to state that she is not always a supporter of George W., but that's a post for another time). There's more of us urban-living, church-going, farmers-market shopping, anti-Sam's Club people than we thought. Has anyone else read the book? Any thoughts on it?

And then there are those of us who would never for Bush and are members of both Sam's Club and organic mountain food co-ops. Go figure. The book does look interesting, though - but you better get your reading in NOW!

Can't wait to hear the news!

Hi Kate, a friendly opposing ping from your good Friend Mike O'Connor. I think maybe you should stick to the baby stuff, you are better sutted there ;-)

Hi, I didn't know you had a blog. I have this book but have only read the first five or six pages. The author is Roman Catholic, so just reading a few pages I was immediately familiar with many of the themes. Roman moral theology has never seen any conflict between law and order, family values, etc., on one hand and distributive justice, stewardship, etc. on the other. Some of the hardcore Catholics I know here in Ohio are actually practicing agrarians. In fact they used to put out a magazine about it called Caelum et Terra, partially archived at http://www.caelumetterra.com .

It looks like Dreher's Catholicism also impacts the book negatively though, e.g. saying we can "save ourselves" (!!!!) by preserving traditional values. (Not that that's an exclusively Catholic problem - most Protestants would have trouble finding what was wrong with that statement.) Anyway let me know if you want to borrow the book.
